Mario Götze: does he follow coach Roger Schmidt from Eindhoven to Benfica Lisbon?
Mario Götze could possibly follow his current coach Roger Schmidt from PSV Eindhoven to Benfica Lisbon in summer.
As the Portuguese sports newspaper A Bola reports, Götze’s name should be on Schmidt’s wish list. The newspaper also relies on reports from the Netherlands that Götze could leave PSV at the end of the season and could also switch to Benfica due to the close bond with his current coach.
At the end of April, Benfica had a “fundamental agreement” with Schmidt about a commitment from the coming season. A possible obligation by Götzes is not an easy undertaking for the Portuguese record champion. It was only last summer that the 2014 world champion extended its contract in Eindhoven until 2024, and his annual salary is expected to be two million euros.
In Lisbon, Götze would also meet Julian Weigl, with whom he played for BVB from 2016 to 2020.
